Odoo 17: new features, end of support and migration
Released in November 2023, Odoo 17 changed the face of Odoo: new interface, ChatGPT-assisted writing, self-ordering at the till and a shop floor application. It has been out of support since the release of Odoo 20.
Where Odoo 16 focused on new applications, Odoo 17 improved what existed and modernised the user experience. This page details the new features of Odoo 17 by domain, based on the publisher's release notes and the source code, then reviews the support situation and the migration to Odoo 19 or Odoo 20.
Odoo 17 at a glance: dates, editions and new interface
Short answer: Odoo 17 was released in November 2023. It left support with the release of Odoo 20, as the publisher only maintains the three latest major versions. It comes in a Community edition (LGPL) and an Enterprise edition.
The first thing you notice when opening Odoo 17 is the interface: cleaner toolbars, list and kanban headers frozen while scrolling, movable dialogs, clickable avatars, abbreviated numeric fields and applications you can reorder on the dashboard. Processes stay the same, which makes adoption easier.
- Progressive web app: Odoo installs on a phone or a computer like an application, straight from the browser.
- Assisted writing: the editor's /ChatGPT command generates or rewrites text in descriptions, website pages, knowledge articles and marketing emails.
- No-code industry packages: configuration packages per industry, published on the App Store, install on every hosting platform.
- Hosting: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and dedicated server. Odoo Online and Odoo.sh now require a supported version.
What Odoo 17 brought, application by application
Every feature listed appears in the official Odoo 17 release notes or in a module of its source code.

CRM and communication
Last and next meeting visible on the opportunity. Built-in WhatsApp messaging for quotations, invoices and confirmations. Discuss gains editing of sent messages, voice messages, pinning and search.
Inventory and logistics
"Least packages" removal strategy that minimises the parcels to open. FIFO cost computed on remaining quantities. Flexible reservation of quantities, automatic printing per operation type, delivery separated from inventory and new Starshipit and Shiprocket carriers.

Human resources
Work location per weekday for remote work, hierarchical org chart, PDF resume generated from the employee form. Attendances redesigned with geolocation, public kiosk and Gantt view. Negative time off balances allowed and shift swaps in Planning.

Point of Sale
Self-ordering by QR code at the table or on a kiosk, online payment of the order, kitchen preparation display, credit limits enforced at the till, orders shared between tills of the same location.
Project and services
Task states (in progress, changes requested, approved, done, cancelled), project created from a sales order, sub-tasks and dependencies visible on kanban cards, To-do application replacing Notes.
Knowledge and documents
Comments on articles, version history, embedded videos, PDF export and access for portal users. In Documents, document requests with reminders and a trash with automatic purge.
Front desk and rooms
Frontdesk application to check visitors in and notify their host, Rooms application to book meeting rooms from a tablet at the door.
Sign and dashboards
Automatic reminders and expiry dates on signature requests. Spreadsheets with dynamic pivot tables, version history, data validation and more than 80 new functions.
Technology and automation: what changes for integrators
- Automation rules: redesigned, with incoming webhook triggers and chained actions, without writing code.
- Property fields: extended to new models, groupable in list and kanban views, with separators to organise them.
- Hierarchy view: a new standard view to display an org chart or any tree structure.
- Charts: stacked bars and a line combined on the same chart to read a trend.
- Digitisation: reading of supplier bills, expenses and CVs relies on a shared, faster service, with credit note detection.
- Peppol: sending and receiving electronic invoices through the Peppol network from the settings, with GLN identifiers.
Odoo 17 end of support: where do things stand today?
Short answer: Odoo 17 left support with the release of Odoo 20. The publisher maintains Odoo 20, Odoo 19 and Odoo 18.
On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, the platform requires a supported version: an Odoo 17 database has to migrate and the timeline is agreed with the host. On a dedicated server, the database keeps running and you choose the date.
On a dedicated server, the risk is measured by the exposure of the database and the sensitivity of the data. A portal, an online store or payroll data call for a short-term migration; an internal database leaves more time. In every case, we advise planning the migration rather than enduring it: the gap with the supported versions is still small, which makes now the best time to run it calmly.
Migrating Odoo 17 to Odoo 19 or Odoo 20: the method
1
Review
Custom modules, third-party modules, interfaces and data volume. Third-party modules still missing on the target version often dictate the choice between Odoo 19 and Odoo 20.
2
Choosing the target
Two jumps to Odoo 19 (18 then 19), three to Odoo 20. Odoo 20 offers the longest support window, Odoo 19 more hindsight and more third-party modules.
3
Dry run
Each jump is run on a copy of the database, checked on accounting, stock and open documents, then validated by your key users.
4
Go-live
During a quiet period, with a short training on the target screens. The full method is described on the Odoo migration page.
Points to watch when migrating from Odoo 17
- /odoo prefix: from Odoo 18 onwards it is used by the back office. Any public page under that path must be moved or redirected before the migration.
- Automations: automation rules and webhooks created in Odoo 17 are replayed on the target version, because the models they target evolve.
- Till and self-ordering: self-ordering and preparation display configurations are checked after migration, screen by screen.
- Custom developments: native views, fields and methods change with every jump; a module written for Odoo 17 is reviewed in full.
- Arriving in Odoo 20: access rights, document printing and field service need checking, as detailed on the Odoo 20 page.
The Odoo 19 changes, artificial intelligence, guided accounting closing and ESG tracking, are presented on the Odoo 19 page.
Frequently asked questions about Odoo 17
No, not since the release of Odoo 20. Only Odoo 20, Odoo 19 and Odoo 18 receive fixes from the publisher.
The new interface, ChatGPT-assisted writing, the progressive web app, self-ordering and the preparation display at the till, the Shop Floor application in manufacturing, deferred revenues and expenses in accounting, the product catalogue and the PDF quote builder in sales, remote work and redesigned attendances in HR.
On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, the platform requires a supported version: the migration is planned with the host.
On a dedicated server, yes: the database keeps running. The publisher no longer issues security fixes, so the risk depends on the exposure of the database and the sensitivity of the data. Planning the migration now, while the gap is small, remains the most comfortable choice.
Two to Odoo 19 (18 then 19), three to Odoo 20. Each jump is tested separately on a copy of the database.
Odoo 20 gives the longest support window. Odoo 19 is more proven and better covered by third-party modules. We choose with you after reviewing your modules.
They are reviewed and adapted at each jump. Those made redundant because the standard now covers the need are removed, which lightens the database. The delivered code is handed over to you.
