Odoo hosting and managed services: choosing where your ERP runs
Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or a dedicated server: your hosting choice determines what you will be able to do next.
In particular, it determines whether you will be able to install custom modules. ANOR helps you choose the Odoo hosting that suits your situation, then provides Odoo.sh managed services or managed services for your on-premise Odoo server when operations are entrusted to our team.
What are the three Odoo hosting options?
Odoo Online
The vendor's SaaS hosting. Simple, with no operations to plan for, but with no custom modules and no community modules.
Odoo.sh
The vendor's platform, which accepts custom modules and provides test environments. It is the usual choice for an SME with a few custom developments.
Dedicated server, on-premise or private cloud
Full control: data location, deep integration with your information system. Operations are then our responsibility.
Which Odoo hosting to choose: SaaS, Odoo.sh or a server?
Short answer: if you will have no custom modules, Odoo Online is enough. As soon as custom development comes into play, you need Odoo.sh or a dedicated server. A dedicated server is justified by a data location requirement or by integration with your information system.
The wrong choice at the start costs a hosting migration later. The detailed comparison is on the SaaS, Odoo.sh or server page.
The three hosting options side by side
| Criterion | Odoo Online | Odoo.sh | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom modules | No | Yes | Yes |
| Test environments provided by the platform | Depends on the vendor's plan | Yes | To be set up |
| Technical operations | Handled by the vendor | Vendor's platform | Handled by ANOR under managed services |
| Control over data location | Depends on the vendor's plan | Depends on the vendor's plan | Total |
This table is deliberately simple. Your situation (data volume, integrations, in-house skills) may change the recommendation, which we review with you before handing over a written opinion.
What we check before making a recommendation
Four questions are often enough to decide:
- Do you have, or will you have, custom modules?
- How much data do you handle?
- Do you have a requirement on where data is stored?
- Do you have technical skills in-house?
We then give you a written recommendation, with its advantages and limits. If the simplest option suits you, we advise it, even if it reduces our share of the operations. This recommendation is part of the free situation audit: it is a consulting deliverable, independent of any operations service that may or may not follow.
What do Odoo managed services include, on Odoo.sh or on a dedicated server?
On Odoo.sh, managed services cover the platform: tracking branches and deployments, test and acceptance environments, checking the backups provided by the platform, preparing updates and version upgrades. When the operation of a dedicated server is entrusted to us, managed services also cover:
- daily backups, with restoration tested;
- monitoring and alerts;
- security updates;
- a separate acceptance-testing environment;
- a written recovery plan.
A backup whose restoration has never been tried is not a backup: that is why restoration tests are part of the service. The acceptance-testing environment lets you validate an update or a new module without touching production.
What service commitments do we make?
We display no availability rate on this page. Service commitments are quantified in the contract, according to the hosting option chosen. You therefore know exactly what we commit to delivering before you sign.
Managed services work hand in hand with support and application maintenance: one operates the infrastructure, the other keeps your configuration alive.
Unsupported version: what hosting changes
The vendor supports the last three major versions. Odoo 17 has no longer been supported since the release of Odoo 20 and Odoo 16 and 15 no longer receive security fixes. The consequence depends on where your database runs.
- On Odoo.sh: the platform requires a supported version. The migration is unavoidable and is planned in advance, with a test database provided by the platform.
- On an on-premise dedicated server: your version keeps running, but without the vendor's security fixes. Managed services then step up monitoring and the upgrade is scheduled at your own pace.
In both cases, the Odoo migration is prepared on a copy of the database, your users accept it and production switches over on an agreed date.
Frequently asked questions about Odoo hosting
No. Odoo Online only allows the vendor's standard features. For custom modules, you need Odoo.sh or a dedicated server.
Yes, but it is a project in its own right. That is why we check your needs for custom development and data location before making a recommendation.
It depends on the option chosen. A dedicated server gives you control over location. If you have a requirement on this point, state it from the first conversation.
Yes, under managed services. Backups are daily, their restoration is tested and a recovery plan is drawn up.
Service commitments are set in the contract, according to the hosting option. We do not display a rate on the website.
Odoo.sh for most SMEs with a few custom modules: test environments provided, operations carried by the vendor, framed version upgrades. An on-premise dedicated server is the right call when data location, deep integration with the information system or an internal security policy requires it.
On Odoo.sh, the platform requires a supported version: the migration gets scheduled. On a dedicated server, the version remains usable, without the vendor's security fixes; we step up monitoring and prepare the upgrade on a test database.
