Choosing your ERP · an integrator's view

Why choose Odoo? Six reasons and their conditions

Why choose Odoo rather than another ERP? Because it brings together, in a single platform, broad functional coverage, a modular architecture and a readable business model.

This page sets out the six reasons that lead the SMEs and mid-sized companies we support to choose Odoo, together with the conditions for each one to hold true in your business. Our partners have 63 years of Odoo between them and have seen sixteen versions come and go: we know what the platform does well and what needs scoping for it to keep its promises. And when the ERP choice is still open, our organisation consulting helps you decide on your processes, not on a brochure.

Is Odoo right for your company?

Odoo is an integrated business management suite of Belgian origin, launched in 2005 as TinyERP, renamed OpenERP and then Odoo in 2014. A major version is released every year. Growing SMEs, mid-sized companies unifying their information system and multi-company groups all find the same foundation, sized differently.

Six advantages of Odoo, the open source ERP for SMEs and mid-sized companies

Each reason is true under one condition: we state it alongside.

Broad functional coverage

Sales, CRM, Accounting, Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Project, Timesheets, Human Resources, eCommerce, Point of Sale, Helpdesk, Field Service, Marketing, Sign, Documents. Condition: choose your first batch rather than switching everything on.

A single platform

One repository for partners, products and journal entries. A confirmed quotation feeds the delivery, the invoice and then the accounts, with no re-keying and no connector between building blocks. Condition: clean master data.

Step-by-step modularity

You start with your most costly flows and add applications in batches, without changing tools or redoing the project. Condition: decide the starting scope early.

A community and an ecosystem

An open source core, community modules, a partner network in France and worldwide, public documentation. Condition: stay with the standard to benefit from it at every version.

A readable cost

One licence per user per month, every application included: €35.90 for the first year, then €44.90 from the second year. Condition: count the real budget, implementation and follow-up included.

Genuine openness

Accessible source code, external APIs, export of your data, three hosting models. You remain free to choose your partner and your infrastructure. Condition: custom code that belongs to you.

A single platform: what it changes day to day

The value of an integrated ERP shows in everyday actions. A salesperson confirms a quotation: the stock reservation, the delivery order and the invoice follow. An accountant reconciles a payment: the customer balance updates and the reminder stops by itself. A workshop manager closes a manufacturing order: the cost price is calculated from the components actually consumed.

That chain exists because every application shares the same database. In return it requires care with master data, partners, products and bills of materials, before the flows are connected. It is the first workstream of our projects and it conditions all the others.

Modularity and ecosystem: growing without redoing the ERP

Many companies begin with sales and invoicing, add inventory when volumes call for it, then accounting, manufacturing or point of sale. Each batch builds on the previous one: same database, same partners, same products.

The Odoo core is published under a free software licence and a major version comes out every year. Community modules, the publisher's App Store and the partner network cover needs beyond the standard. We contribute to it with ten modules published on the Odoo App Store and more than a thousand installations in total.

  • The standard first, then configuration, then custom development only.
  • Custom code written cleanly, documented and handed over to the client: it belongs to you.
  • Version upgrades prepared in advance, because every customisation will have to be carried forward.

Cost and openness: a model you can check

Odoo's business model reads in one line: one licence per internal user, every application included. Odoo's offer is the "Custom" plan at €35.90 per user per month for the first year, then €44.90 from the second year, with multi-company and external APIs. Your customers and suppliers use the portal without a licence.

The real budget of an ERP also covers hosting, implementation and follow-up. We detail it in our guides, without ranges that would mean nothing for your situation. To place Odoo next to Sage, Cegid, SAP Business One or Dolibarr, our comparisons present each solution on identical criteria, without running anyone down: every tool has its ground.

Openness can be checked too: the source code can be read, your data can be exported, the API connects your bank, your payroll or your line-of-business tool and you choose between Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and a dedicated server according to how much control you need.

Choosing an ERP: the conditions for Odoo to succeed

Odoo keeps its promises when the project is driven by processes, not by the application catalogue. Four conditions come up in all our successful projects:

  1. A sponsor who makes decisions and one key user per domain, available for acceptance testing.
  2. Master data cleaned before migration, not after.
  3. A limited first batch, put into service and used, before extending.
  4. The standard adopted wherever it meets the need, custom work reserved for what sets you apart.

When these conditions are met, an ERP migration can be carried out with no interruption to business: our reference in industrial manufacturing did it in two months.

An open, high-performance technical foundation built for AI

Odoo rests on two open, proven building blocks, then adds artificial intelligence to its applications.

PostgreSQL, an open and ultra high-performance database

Odoo relies on PostgreSQL, the reference open database: robust, fast on large volumes and with no licence to pay for the database.

A Python framework, the language of AI

Odoo adaptations are written in Python, the dominant language of artificial intelligence: skills are plentiful and AI plugs in naturally.

Particularly advanced AI in Odoo 20

Odoo 20 embeds AI in its applications: agents, AI-computed fields and connection to external tools through the MCP protocol. The Enterprise edition has more than 50 AI modules.

Frequently asked questions: why choose Odoo

Yes, provided you start small: two or three applications, a scope used every day, then extensions. The same platform then supports growth without a change of tool.

Yes. The French localisation provides the chart of accounts, taxes, the export of the statutory accounting entries file and, since Odoo 20, an e-invoicing module. Detailed statutory statements are still produced with your chartered accountant.

The software installs on its own; an ERP project, however, is won on the ground: processes, configuration, data migration, training. An integrator turns installed software into a tool that is adopted and can be upgraded. Our guide on choosing an integrator gives the criteria.

The publisher releases one major version a year and supports the last three. Standard applications are migrated by its upgrade service; your custom modules and your data are prepared with us.

Yes. Your data can be exported, the custom code belongs to you and the core of the software is open source. That freedom is one of the reasons to choose it.

It replaces most of them and connects to the others through its APIs: bank, payroll, carriers, a line-of-business tool you keep. Scoping decides, tool by tool, what moves over and what is interfaced.

On your processes, not on a feature list. A short specification built on your most costly flows, then a walkthrough of each candidate on those real flows, separates the contenders. Our organisation consulting runs this ERP selection with you, starting from a complimentary situation audit.

A readable open source core, one per-user licence with every app included, one major version a year, three hosting options and custom code that belongs to you. In return, the project calls for serious scoping and a restricted first batch.
