Odoo food industry ERP: traceability, use-by dates and catch weights

With Odoo, a product recall takes minutes: batch traceability, use-by dates and daily pricing are built in. ANOR deploys your food industry ERP in phases, starting with purchasing, goods receipt and stock.

The food industry, seafood and food trading sectors have requirements that few ERPs genuinely cover as standard: first-expired first-out rotation, catch weights with separate sales and billing units, purchase prices that change every morning, temperature-controlled quality checks and allergens. Odoo covers all of these and ANOR guides you through configuration without unnecessary custom development.

What Odoo covers for the food industry and seafood

The scope of an Odoo food industry ERP includes purchasing, goods receipt with quality control, batch and use-by date stock management, sales with daily pricing and catch weights, recipe-based manufacturing with yield tracking, barcode labelling and accounting. Odoo 20 adds AI agents that speed up data entry and alerting.

ANOR breaks the project into three phases to limit risk and validate value at each step.

Industry challenges covered by Odoo

Each business challenge is linked to the Odoo application that handles it natively.

Upstream and downstream traceability, product recall

Every batch received is tracked from goods receipt through to delivery. In the event of a recall, the list of affected customers is available in a few clicks from the batch interface.

Odoo Inventory

Use-by dates, best-before dates and FEFO rotation

Odoo applies the FEFO (first-expired, first-out) strategy automatically at reservation and picking, with no custom development required.

Odoo Inventory

Catch weights and dual units of measure

You sell by the case and invoice by the kilogram. Odoo manages separate sales and billing units with automatic conversion at weighing.

Odoo Sales

Daily purchase and selling prices

Odoo pricelists allow supplier and customer prices to be updated every morning, by product or product family, manually or by import.

Odoo Purchase

Recipes, yields and by-products

The Manufacturing application manages bills of materials, yield rates and by-products (bones, trimmings). Yield variances are tracked in real time.

Odoo Manufacturing

Quality controls and temperature checks

Quality control points are defined at goods receipt, during production and at despatch. Temperature readings are entered on control sheets.

Odoo Quality

Allergens and product technical data sheets

Allergen and nutritional information is stored on the product record and available for printing or via the B2B portal.

Odoo Inventory

Fast despatch and delivery runs

Pick lists are generated by wave or by delivery run. Barcode scanning guides the picker with no re-keying of data.

Odoo Inventory

B2B portal and online ordering

Your trade customers place orders on their dedicated portal, view their prices and track their deliveries without needing to call.

Odoo eCommerce B2B

What is standard and what needs scoping upfront

Odoo natively covers batch traceability, use-by dates, FEFO, catch weights, daily pricing, manufacturing recipes, quality controls and the B2B portal. These are all standard features requiring no custom development.

However, three topics require scoping before signing to avoid surprises:

  • Connected weighing: Odoo does not natively drive floor or counter scales. An interface needs to be assessed based on your equipment.
  • Regulatory labelling: label templates (FIC/food information regulations, nutrition labelling, GS1 barcodes) are configured and may require an add-on module depending on the level of complexity.
  • Retail EDI: compatibility with each retailer's system (GXS, Sinfos, Edifact) must be verified before any commitment is made.

For refrigerated environments, Odoo connects to cold-chain monitoring tools via its open APIs, without modifying the core application.

Odoo 20 and AI for food traceability

Odoo 20 includes highly advanced AI capabilities: 52 AI modules in the Enterprise edition compared with 15 in Odoo 19. For the food industry, this means agents that can monitor stock levels, trigger automatic use-by date alerts and prepare replenishment orders without manual intervention.

The technical foundations reinforce these capabilities: PostgreSQL handles high transaction volumes reliably and Python, the native language of the Odoo framework, is also the leading language in AI development. Both the Community and Enterprise editions are open source, making it possible to audit every line of code deployed on your data.

The ANOR approach to a food industry ERP project

1

1. Assessment and scoping

A 30-minute initial call helps us understand your business: fresh, frozen, multi-temperature, wholesale market or processing. We then propose a phased scope with dates and explanations, clearly identifying the topics that need scoping before signing. Process review is included as part of the organisational consulting engagement.

2

2. Phased scope and data migration

Phase 1 covers purchasing, goods receipt, batch stock management and invoicing. Data migration (products, suppliers, customers, batch history) is planned with you. With 63 cumulative years of Odoo experience between the partners, we know how to anticipate the classic pitfalls of food industry data migration.

3

3. Go-live and training

The go-live is prepared using real data tested in advance. Training is delivered by certified consultants who understand the constraints of the sector. Our aim is zero days of business disruption at cutover.

4

4. Support and ongoing development

After go-live, we remain available for support and application maintenance. Subsequent phases (manufacturing, quality, B2B portal) are triggered once Phase 1 is stable. Migrations to future Odoo versions are managed as part of a continuous relationship.

Concrete examples (anonymised references)

Fresh and frozen seafood trader

A seafood trader handling both fresh and frozen products was using spreadsheets to track batches and use-by dates. The uncontrolled product recall risk alone justified the project. Odoo Phase 1 covered purchasing, goods receipt with automatic use-by date assignment, FEFO stock management and invoicing with catch weight handling. Upstream and downstream traceability is now available in real time.

Multi-entity food trader at Rungis market

A food trading group operating several entities at Rungis market needed a consolidated view of stock and margins by company. The Odoo Custom offer with multi-company mode made it possible to share a common product and supplier repository while keeping separate accounting books. Daily purchase prices are entered once and propagated to purchase orders for each entity.

Odoo licence pricing

Odoo offers the Custom plan at €35.90 per user per month in the first year, then €44.90 from the second year onwards, with all applications, multi-company and external APIs included.

This pricing is set by Odoo as publisher. ANOR is a partner and integrator: the integration, consulting and training fees are quoted after the initial call. No estimate is given without first understanding your context.

Frequently asked questions about Odoo food industry ERP

Yes, this is a standard feature. You define a sales unit (case, piece) and a billing unit (kilogram). The conversion is applied automatically at invoicing, with the actual weight entered at delivery or receipt.

Yes. The Inventory application natively manages batch numbers, expiry dates (use-by and best-before) and the FEFO (first-expired, first-out) strategy. No custom development is needed to cover these core functions.

Yes. Starting from a batch number or supplier, Odoo immediately identifies all affected batches, the customers who received them and the remaining stock. A recall procedure that previously took several days can now be completed in minutes.

Allergen information is stored on the product record and can be printed or published on the B2B portal. For full regulatory labelling (food information regulations, nutrition labelling), the label template needs to be configured and may require an add-on module depending on the level of complexity: this is a point to scope before signing.

Connected weighing is not part of Odoo's standard features. An interface needs to be assessed based on your equipment (scale protocol, network type). This topic is identified during the scoping phase before any commitment is made.

EDI (Edifact, GXS, etc.) is not natively integrated into Odoo. Connectors are available on the market and custom development is possible. Compatibility with each retailer must be verified before the project begins. ANOR includes this in Phase 3, after Phases 1 and 2 have been stabilised.

We migrated our ERP in two months with no interruption to our operations.
