COMPARISON · ODOO VS PENNYLANE

Odoo or Pennylane: how to choose

Pennylane excels at connecting a business and its accountant around finance. As soon as operations go beyond financial management alone, Odoo takes over and covers the entire business without any manual re-entry.

Our business is implementing Odoo, so we have a stake in this. This page also tells you what Pennylane does well and when it is enough. We believe you deserve an honest analysis rather than a one-sided pitch.

Odoo or Pennylane: the straight answer

The distinction is straightforward. Pennylane starts from finance and works up towards operations. Odoo starts from operations, from quotes to deliveries and feeds accounting in real time. These are fundamentally different philosophies.

For a start-up or a consulting firm that invoices services and wants its accountant to access data directly, Pennylane meets the need. For a small or medium-sized business managing stock, manufacturing, projects or an online shop, a tool built solely around finance creates blind spots.

What Pennylane does well

Pennylane is not a minor tool. Here is what it does better than most.

Collaborative accounting

Pennylane is designed for a business and its accountant to work in the same tool, in real time. The firm sees the data without any exports or file transfers.

Automated bookkeeping preparation

Expense categorisation, bank reconciliation and document preparation are largely automated. The time saved on repetitive tasks is real.

Invoicing and bank reconciliation

Invoicing is smooth and bank reconciliation happens without friction. For a pure invoicing activity, the interface is quick to get to grips with.

Financial dashboards

Cash flow, profitability and outstanding balances are accessible without complex setup. Business owners can see their financial position at a glance.

Adopted by accounting firms

Pennylane is widely used by French accounting firms. If your firm already uses it, integration is almost immediate.

Built for young businesses

Fast onboarding and a clean interface: Pennylane suits teams that want to get started quickly without lengthy configuration.

Where Odoo goes much further

Pennylane handles what happens after the activity: the invoice, the bank, the accounts. Odoo manages the activity itself and then produces the accounting from it, with no manual re-entry.

Operations and finance in a single platform

A quote confirmed in Odoo creates a purchase order, triggers stock preparation, generates the invoice and feeds the accounting entries. Everything is linked. With Pennylane alone, each of those steps lives in a separate tool and requires synchronisation.

  • Quotes, customer orders and supplier purchases fully integrated
  • Stock, inventory and stock movements in real time
  • Manufacturing and production orders (Odoo MRP)
  • Project management, timesheets and field operations
  • CRM, sales pipeline and automated follow-ups
  • Point of sale and eCommerce connected to the same accounting
  • Full accounting with FEC and electronic invoicing as an approved partner platform

Pennylane has no stock module

This is the most concrete point. As soon as a business manages product references, stock levels or shipments, Pennylane cannot support it. Odoo includes a full stock module with replenishment rules, multiple locations and traceability by batch or serial number.

Electronic invoicing: Odoo is an approved platform

The obligation for electronic invoicing between VAT-registered businesses is being rolled out progressively in France. Odoo is an approved partner dematerialisation platform (PDP) certified by the French tax authority. This covers the issuing, receipt and submission of invoices within the French regulatory framework, with FEC included.

A flexibility no financial tool can match

Pennylane is a finished product, built for a defined use case. That is a strength for getting started quickly. It becomes a limitation as the business evolves.

Odoo is a platform. It adapts to your processes, not the other way around.

  • Configuration without development: validation rules, approval flows, custom fields and views tailored to each team.
  • Modules you can activate on demand: start with accounting and sales, then add stock or manufacturing when the need arises.
  • Custom developments that do not touch the core: a bespoke module installs alongside the standard. Odoo updates do not overwrite it. Find out more about custom development.
  • Open APIs: connect your online shop, your logistics, your payroll tool or any third-party service.
  • Controlled version upgrades: ANOR is proficient across Odoo versions 5 to 20, covering 16 versions. A migration takes between 2 and 9 months depending on complexity.

An open, high-performance technical foundation built for AI

Pennylane is built on a proprietary SaaS architecture. Odoo is built on PostgreSQL, an open-source database recognised for its performance and on Python, the leading language for artificial intelligence.

Odoo 20 is the most advanced edition in terms of AI: 52 ai* modules in the Enterprise edition, compared to 15 in Odoo 19. In practice, this means AI agents in sales, purchasing, stock, project management, support and email marketing, fields calculated automatically by AI (ai_fields) and a connection to the MCP protocol (ai_mcp) for integrations with external assistants.

This technical foundation is a lasting advantage: advances in AI benefit Odoo directly, without waiting on a third-party publisher.

When to choose Pennylane or Odoo

Pennylane is the right choice if…

Your business is a pure service activity with no stock management. Your accounting firm already works on Pennylane and you want to collaborate directly with them. Your team is small and you need an accounting tool that is operational quickly, without a lengthy IT project.

Odoo is the right choice if…

You manage stock, supplier purchasing, projects, on-site operations or multiple sales channels. Your business is growing and you need accounting to be an automatic reflection of operations, without juggling multiple tools or maintaining fragile synchronisations.

What if you use both in parallel?

Some businesses consider keeping Pennylane for accounting and adding Odoo for operations. This is technically feasible: a synchronisation can be set up between the two tools.

The question to ask is simple: does the collaboration benefit with your firm outweigh the complexity of running two databases? For most growing SMEs, the answer is no.

Frequently asked questions: Odoo or Pennylane

Yes, this is possible through a data synchronisation between the two tools. ANOR can design this architecture if your accounting firm requires it. That said, we advise against it as soon as the volume of transactions is significant: keeping two databases consistent carries an ongoing cost and a risk of discrepancies. Odoo includes full accounting functionality, which means coexistence is rarely necessary in the long run.

Odoo allows you to give your accountant a user login with permissions appropriate to their role. They can review journal entries, approve documents and export what they need. Another option is to share data with them via standardised exports (FEC, trial balance, general ledger). Moving to Odoo does not require your firm to change the tool they use on their side.

Yes. Odoo is an approved partner dematerialisation platform (PDP) certified by the French tax authority for electronic invoicing between VAT-registered businesses. This covers the issuing, receipt and submission of invoices within the applicable regulatory framework, with FEC included.

For Pennylane pricing, check the publisher's website directly: we do not quote competitor prices. On the Odoo side, the Custom offer is priced by the publisher at 35.90 € per user per month in the first year, then 44.90 € from the second year onwards, with all applications included. For a small team, the Odoo licence cost remains accessible. The right criterion is not just the licence price but the total cost, taking into account the tools you will not need to buy separately. See our guide on the cost of Odoo for more detail.

Yes. A data migration from Pennylane to Odoo covers the chart of accounts, historical journal entries, third parties (customers and suppliers) and opening balances. ANOR has expertise in data migration for ERP and accounting software projects. The timeline depends on the volume and quality of the source data. Find out about our approach on data migration and our expertise in Odoo migration.

No. Pennylane is focused on finance: accounting, invoicing, banking and dashboards. It does not offer a stock management module. If your business involves goods moving in and out, multiple storage locations or batch traceability, Odoo is the right tool.
