COMPARISON · ODOO VS MAGENTO
Odoo or Magento: how to choose
For a large online store with very high traffic and a dedicated technical team, Magento still has strong arguments. For a small or mid-sized business that wants to connect its website to its operations without a layer of connectors to maintain, Odoo is the natural choice.
Our business is implementing Odoo, so we are not a neutral party. This page also covers what Magento does well and when it is sufficient. You will find the facts needed to make an informed choice, without any sales pitch.
Odoo or Magento: the direct answer
Magento (Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce) is a leading eCommerce platform, built for large catalogues and demanding B2B projects. Odoo covers the same commerce scope and adds stock management, purchasing, accounting and point of sale in a single database, with no ERP connector to maintain. For small and mid-sized businesses, the total cost of ownership with Odoo is significantly lower.
The question is not "which one is better?" but "which one fits your situation?" A niche operator with a catalogue of several million references, a dedicated cloud infrastructure and an in-house Magento development team has good reasons to stay on Magento. A business that sells online and wants orders to feed directly into stock and accounting, with no re-keying or fragile API: Odoo is a better fit for that need.
What Magento genuinely does well
Magento is not a platform you replace lightly. Here is what it actually brings to the table.
Very large-scale catalogues
Magento handles tens of thousands of references with complex attributes, nested variants and differentiated pricing rules. This is one of its long-standing strengths.
Native multi-store management
A single Magento installation can run several stores with distinct catalogues, languages and currencies. Multi-site management is built into the core of the product.
Advanced B2B features
Adobe Commerce includes proven B2B tools: company accounts, dedicated catalogues and pricing, online quotes and order approval by hierarchy level.
Front-end flexibility
Magento offers a great deal of freedom in site rendering: custom themes, PWA and headless commerce. Experienced front-end teams find a full creative environment here.
Extension ecosystem
The Magento marketplace offers thousands of extensions covering logistics, payments, marketing and international tax management.
High-traffic performance
With the right infrastructure, Magento absorbs significant traffic spikes. Adobe Commerce includes cloud hosting options optimised for this scenario.
Where Odoo goes much further
A single database for the whole business
With Magento, the site handles sales. Stock management, purchasing, accounting and point of sale live in a separate system, connected by a connector. That connector has a cost to build, maintain and update with every version upgrade. With Odoo, an order placed on the site directly triggers the pick list, updates stock and generates the accounting entry, all within the same database.
A cost of ownership suited to small and mid-sized businesses
Magento Open Source is free to licence, but hosting, specialist developers, version upgrades and extension maintenance represent significant budgets. Adobe Commerce adds a licence whose price must be requested directly from Adobe. Odoo offers the Custom plan at €35.90 per user per month in the first year, then €44.90 from the second year onwards, with all applications included. For a team of reasonable size, the difference in total cost is clear.
No permanent Magento specialist required
A medium-sized Magento project often requires at least one dedicated PHP-Magento developer or a specialist agency. Odoo is built on Python, a general-purpose language that dominates the AI world, which considerably broadens the pool of available skills.

Flexibility with no equivalent in the eCommerce world
Magento is very flexible within its domain: the front end and the catalogue. Odoo is flexible across the entire business operation. This is a difference in nature, not in degree.
Configuration without development
Most business-specific adaptations in Odoo (pricing rules, approval workflows, additional fields, reports) are configured without writing a single line of code. In Magento, the slightest departure from the standard often requires an extension or a PHP development.
Modules activated on demand
Odoo grows with the business: start with eCommerce and stock, then add accounting, manufacturing or point of sale when the need arises. Everything coexists in the same database without re-keying.
Custom development without touching the core
When a business requirement is genuinely non-standard, Odoo allows development of a module that is isolated from the core product. Version upgrades do not overwrite custom modules: they are updated independently. ANOR publishes 10 modules on the Odoo App Store and hands the source code over to the client.
Open API and MCP protocol
Odoo exposes a standardised JSON-RPC and XML-RPC API. Odoo 20 adds an MCP connection, allowing AI agents to interact directly with business data. No competing eCommerce tool integrates this level of AI natively.
Controlled version upgrades
Migrating from Magento 1 to Magento 2 was a multi-year project for many businesses. Odoo version upgrades are plannable: on a base that has remained close to the standard, an upgrade can be completed in a single day.
The technical foundation of Odoo: PostgreSQL, Python and AI
Odoo is built on PostgreSQL, a free and extremely powerful database and on Python, the language of the framework and the dominant language in AI worldwide. This foundation is not a minor detail: it explains why Odoo 20 integrates AI in a particularly advanced way.
Odoo 20 Enterprise includes 52 AI modules: autonomous agents in sales, purchasing, stock, project and support; AI-computed fields (ai_fields); an AI action server; and the MCP connection (ai_mcp), which allows external agents to query and control Odoo in natural language.
For an eCommerce site, this means in practice: AI-generated reorder recommendations, automated handling of customer requests, assisted product description enrichment and many other uses as the ecosystem continues to grow.
When to choose Magento and when to choose Odoo
Choose Magento if...
Your business is focused on pure eCommerce, your catalogue exceeds several hundred thousand references with highly complex attributes, you have an in-house PHP-Magento technical team or a dedicated partner and your existing ERP (SAP, Microsoft...) is already in place and will not change.
Choose Odoo if...
You are a small or mid-sized business that sells online and also manages stock, purchasing and accounting; you want to avoid maintaining a fragile ERP connector; you do not have a dedicated technical team and you are looking for a tool that grows with you without changing platform.
Migrating from Magento to Odoo: the key points
Migrating from Magento to Odoo is a structured operation, not a simple data switch. Here are the workstreams to plan for.
- 301 redirects: every Magento product, category and page URL must be redirected to its Odoo equivalent to preserve existing search rankings.
- Catalogue migration: attributes, variants, images, descriptions and prices require precise mapping before import. The quality of the source data determines the speed of the migration.
- Customers and B2B accounts: customer records, specific pricing and commercial terms by account must be transferred accurately.
- Order history: depending on your legal obligations and customer service needs, all or part of past orders can be brought into Odoo.
- Third-party connectors: each Magento extension (ERP, marketplace, carrier, payment) must be replaced or reconfigured within the Odoo ecosystem.
The duration of an ERP migration ranges from 2 to 9 months depending on the scope and the state of the source data. A preliminary situation audit allows the project to be estimated with precision.
How ANOR approaches a Magento to Odoo migration
1
Situation audit
We map your catalogue, your workflows (stock, purchasing, accounting), your active Magento extensions and the state of your data. The audit is free and without obligation.
2
Scoping and mapping
We define what is migrated, what is reconfigured and what is retired. We plan the SEO redirects and prepare the migration scripts.
3
Migration and testing
Data is imported into a test environment and verified with your teams. Any discrepancies are corrected before the production switch.
4
Go-live and support
The go-live is scheduled to minimise downtime. Your teams are trained and supported during the first weeks of operation.
A situation audit to clarify your project
You are currently using Magento and wondering about the next step: is Odoo genuinely suited to your catalogue, your B2B processes and your order volumes? A free situation audit gives you a concrete answer, with no obligation.
ANOR brings together 63 combined years of Odoo experience among its partners, covering versions 5 to 20. Five consultants are Odoo-certified. Our migrations last between 2 and 9 months depending on the scope; the fastest was completed in two months with no business interruption.

Frequently asked questions: Odoo or Magento
Odoo manages catalogues of several tens of thousands of references with attributes and variants. For catalogues of several hundred thousand references with extremely complex attribute rules, Magento remains more specialised. If your catalogue is of reasonable size and your main need is to connect it to your back-office operations, Odoo is more than sufficient.
Yes, provided the 301 redirects are planned before the switch. Every Magento URL (product, category and content page) must be redirected to its Odoo equivalent. This step is documented in our migration approach and must be addressed during project scoping, not at the end of the testing phase.
Yes. Odoo allows several eCommerce sites to be managed from the same instance, with distinct catalogues, pricing and legal entities. The Custom plan includes multi-company support. For very different stores with highly demanding front-end requirements, a Magento multi-site architecture may still be relevant.
Odoo natively offers B2B portals with company accounts, customer-specific pricing, online quotes and order approval workflows. Adobe Commerce has historically had an edge on certain highly advanced B2B features (shared catalogues, requisition lists). For the vast majority of small and mid-sized businesses in B2B sales, Odoo's B2B capability covers their needs without additional cost.
The cost depends on the size of the catalogue, the state of the source data, the workflows to reconfigure and any custom features to redevelop. The Odoo licence is €35.90 per user per month in the first year, then €44.90 from the second year onwards. For the cost of the migration service itself, a preliminary situation audit is essential: there is no generic flat rate that applies to all Magento projects.
Technically yes: Odoo exposes a JSON-RPC API that can be queried from Magento. However, this architecture recreates exactly the connector maintenance problem: two databases, two versions to keep in sync and two teams. It may be justified when the Magento front end is heavily customised and a rebuild is not immediately affordable. In all other cases, a unified Odoo database is simpler and less costly in the long run.
