How many French companies can say precisely what average discount their salespeople grant by customer category, by product family, by period of the year? Very few. Yet this data, rarely consolidated, holds one of the most direct levers of profitability. The pricing policy of a French SME or mid-sized company is often a system built by sedimentation, opaque to the salespeople who apply it as much as to the management who endure it. Bringing transparency and discipline to it is one of the most profitable governance projects.

The silent drift of margins

In most companies, sales practice gradually drifts away from the official pricing policy. A salesperson negotiates an exceptional discount to win an important account. This discount becomes an implicit reference for comparable customers. Through renewals and account expansions, the “exceptional discount” becomes widespread. A few years later, the catalog price has become fictitious and the real margin has eroded by several points without any explicit decision having been made.

This silent drift has a massive cost. For an SME with twenty million euros in revenue, a five-point margin erosion means one million euros a year of vanished profit. And yet this erosion is rarely identified as such. It appears as a cyclical fatality, an effect of competition, market pressure. In reality, it is most often the effect of faulty internal governance.

Pricelists as a governance tool

Odoo's pricelists meet this governance need. Instead of letting each salesperson negotiate on their own, the company explicitly defines several lists corresponding to customer segments or typical commercial situations.

  • A “consumers” list with strict catalog prices
  • A “professional resellers” list with a structural discount
  • A “strategic partners” list with preferential terms
  • A “European Union export” list with specific terms
  • Each customer is attached to a list by default, which automatically applies to their orders

This structure does not eliminate negotiation. It frames it. A salesperson who wants to grant a discount beyond the applicable list must have the gap approved by their manager. This approval, which takes a few minutes, is generally enough to eliminate uncontrolled drift. The salesperson knows their decision will be traced. The manager can step in before the concession is made. Management keeps control of the effective pricing policy.

Internal transparency, a condition of performance

A pricing policy bears fruit only if it is known to those who apply it. This truism is in fact rarely respected. In many companies, salespeople have only a vague idea of the margins they generate by product, by customer, by category. They negotiate blind, which leads them to make disproportionate concessions on low-stakes dimensions, and to harden on high-stakes ones.

Integrating pricelists into the ERP transforms this opacity. A salesperson preparing a quotation sees in real time the margin generated by each line. They know what discount they can grant without penalizing the customer's profitability. They identify the products on which they can be more generous and those on which they must not give way.

This transparency is not a technical comfort. It is a change in sales posture. The salesperson moves from a logic of defending positions to a logic of negotiated optimization. For sales managers who want to professionalize their teams, it is one of the most powerful levers.

Promotions and loyalty programs

Beyond structural pricelists, Odoo manages one-off promotions and loyalty programs. These mechanisms, common in distribution and e-commerce, also deserve to be managed with rigor.

A well-designed promotion meets a specific objective:

  • clear out a product family, attract a new customer segment, counter a competitor's action, leverage a seasonal event.
  • Without a clear objective, the promotion becomes a cost that generates no additional value.
  • With a clear objective, it can be measured and repeated if it works.

Loyalty programs, for their part, are best thought of as long-term investments rather than short-term benefits. A well-built loyalty card strengthens the link with the best customers, increases their purchase frequency, and collects valuable data on their behavior. A poorly designed card creates recurring costs without changing behavior.

The challenge of omnichannel consistency

For companies that sell through several channels, price consistency becomes a matter of credibility. A customer who discovers that the same product is sold for less on the website than in the physical store feels cheated. A customer who gets a negotiated price from a salesperson and finds a lower price in self-service on the site is disoriented. These inconsistencies, frequent in organizations that manage their channels separately, undermine trust.

Unifying pricelists in Odoo makes it possible to settle these questions explicitly. You can decide that prices are identical across all channels, or differentiated according to a logic that is accepted and can be explained to the customer. What matters is not so much the choice made as the consistency of its application.

A lasting management discipline

Putting a structured pricing policy in place is only a beginning. Maintaining this structure over time requires discipline. Annual review of pricelists. Quarterly analysis of effective margin by segment. Semi-annual audit of the gaps between applicable price and invoiced price. These routines, simple to organize, durably transform the company's economic performance.

ANOR supports this structuring by combining economic margin analysis, configuration of Odoo pricelists, and training of sales teams in the new negotiation discipline.
