Physical retail is not dead. After years of apocalyptic predictions about the end of retail, the picture is nuanced. Some retailers have disappeared, others have mutated, still others are experiencing a renaissance. The discriminating factor is not the physical format itself but the quality of the experience offered to the customer and the intelligence of the information system underpinning that experience. For French SMEs and mid-sized companies that operate points of sale, or are considering opening some, the issue is no longer choosing between physical and digital. It is the intelligent convergence of the two.

The obsolescence of standalone tills

For decades, the cash register was a specialized device, optimized for transaction speed, but isolated from the rest of the information system. Sales were recorded locally. Stock was updated in asynchronous cycles, sometimes daily. Accounting received its postings as files or manual entries. This architecture, inherited from an era when connectivity was limited, persists in many SMEs today.

The cost of this isolation is manifold. Stock discrepancies between physical reality and the IT record lead to untenable commercial promises ("we have it in stock" when it is no longer there). Customer accounts in the sales system diverge from customer accounts in store (the customer is recognized on the website but unknown in the shop). Loyalty programs apply imperfectly depending on the purchase channel. Managing the business relies on laborious consolidations between disparate data sources.

The till as an ERP module

The modern approach reverses this logic. The till is no longer an isolated device that you connect as best you can. It becomes a module of the ERP, just like online sales or B2B invoicing. Transactions are recorded in real time in the same database. Stock is updated instantly. The customer is recognized in the same way whether they come to buy in store or on the website.

This unification has considerable practical consequences. When a customer walks into the store, the salesperson immediately sees their history:

  • their previous purchases (in store and online), their preferences, any outstanding balance, their membership in a loyalty program.
  • The relationship is personalized instantly.

When the salesperson recommends a product that is not available in the store but is available in the central warehouse, they can order it immediately with home delivery, without breaking the purchase. The customer leaves satisfied, and the company captures the sale that the physical stockout would have lost.

Built-in regulatory compliance

France requires cash register software to hold a specific certification, the NF525 standard, to fight VAT fraud. This certification guarantees that the software complies with strict rules: data inalterability, traceability of changes, secure backup, auditability.

Odoo has an NF525-certified version for French retail cash registers. This native compliance avoids buying often costly add-on modules and specific configurations. For French SMEs and mid-sized companies subject to this obligation, it is an important factor of administrative security.

Restaurants and their specifics

For restaurants, Odoo offers a specific version of Point of Sale with dedicated features: table management and status, sending orders to the kitchen, splitting the bill among several diners, server management with transaction assignment, tip management.

These features, drawn from the vendor's experience in this sector, allow restaurants, brasseries, cafés and other establishments to benefit from a tool integrated into their overall information system, rather than settling for a disconnected specialized till.

For multi-site restaurant groups or franchised chains, native integration enables real-time consolidation of activities, which transforms the quality of operational management.

Omnichannel beyond the rhetoric

Omnichannel has become a keyword of contemporary retail, sometimes used as an empty slogan. Yet the concrete reality of omnichannel begins in specific, technical features.

A customer buys online and picks up in store. The transaction is single, but it involves the website (order, payment) and the store (preparation, handover). Without an integrated system, this mechanism requires complex synchronizations and remains a source of errors. In Odoo, it is native.

A customer returns to the store a product bought online. The salesperson records the return, which updates store stock and triggers the accounting credit note. Without an integrated system, this mechanism is a nightmare. In Odoo, it is routine.

A customer uses in store a promotion received by email. The salesperson validates the promotion, which applies automatically to the basket, updates sales accounting, and tracks the effectiveness of the marketing campaign. Without an integrated system, this measurement is impossible. In Odoo, it is immediate.

Mobile in the salesperson's hand

Recent developments see the smartphone or tablet replacing the traditional till for some uses. The in-store salesperson moves freely with their mobile terminal, can check a product's stock, can take payment anywhere in the store, and can advise the customer without bringing them back to a counter.

This fluidity changes the quality of the customer experience. The moment of the transaction is no longer a mandatory and sometimes painful step (queue, handling). It becomes a natural extension of the sales conversation. In Odoo, mobile mode is native. No specialized equipment is required: a standard phone or tablet is enough.

A transformation to lead

Rethinking your point of sale as an integrated module of the ERP is not a mere technical operation. It is a transformation that touches the practices of sales teams, store organization, salesperson training and inventory management. This transformation is led with support, over a few months, and its benefits are measured over time.

ANOR supports French SMEs and mid-sized companies in this modernization by combining functional audit, Odoo configuration, regulatory compliance, and change management.
