Odoo 15: new features, end of support and migration

Released in October 2021, Odoo 15 brought video calls, a new content editor and promotions at the till. It has been out of support since October 2024.

This page gathers the new features of Odoo 15 by domain, as found in the version's source code, then reviews the support situation and the migration to Odoo 19 or Odoo 20. If you searched for "Odoo 15 new features" or "Odoo 15 end of support", you are in the right place.

Odoo 15 at a glance: dates, editions and requirements

Odoo 15 is the version that laid the technical foundations of the next ones: a web client rewritten with the OWL framework, JavaScript modules in ES6 format and the command palette. On the business side, it mostly enriched what already existed: Discuss, Point of Sale, Inventory, Events and Website.

  • Requirements: Python 3.7 at least, as declared in the version's setup file.
  • Editions: Community and Enterprise. Documents, Spreadsheets, Appointments and Sign remain specific to the Enterprise edition.
  • Hosting: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh and dedicated server, bearing in mind that Odoo Online and Odoo.sh no longer accept this version today.

What Odoo 15 brought, application by application

Each point below matches a module or a model present in the Odoo 15 source code and absent from Odoo 14.

Accounting and invoicing

EU One Stop Shop (OSS) for VAT, with automatic creation of fiscal positions and taxes. Import and export of invoices in UBL BIS 3 format, the basis of the Peppol network. New Mollie payment provider.

Sales and marketing

Gift cards sold in the shop, at the till and in the online store. SMS sent from quotations and from campaigns linked to sales and CRM. Email discussion groups to run a community.

CRM and messaging

Outlook and Gmail add-ins that create a lead or a task straight from an incoming email. Audio and video calls with screen sharing in Discuss, with no external tool.

Inventory and logistics

Redesigned inventory adjustments: no more intermediate inventory document, each location is counted on its scheduled date by the assigned person. GS1-128 barcode parsing. Pick-up point delivery with Mondial Relay.

Manufacturing

Repairs linked to manufacturing, a bridge between subcontracting and purchasing to track supplied components, manufactured kits sold at the till and manufacturing tracked from a project.

Human resources

Work entries computed from the contract and time off taken into account in payslips, two building blocks that prepare payroll in the following versions.

Website and eCommerce

New content editor shared by the website and the rest of Odoo. Product images fetched automatically from the barcode. "Back in stock" alert on the wishlist.

Point of Sale

Coupons and promotions finally available at the till, a configurator for products with variants and margin displayed on sales orders paid at the till.

Project and events

Burndown chart for tasks, project profitability enriched with purchases and expenses. Exhibitor booths sold online for trade shows and events.

Interface, technology and security: what changed under the hood

The most lasting changes in Odoo 15 are technical. They explain why a development written for Odoo 14 needs a full review to move to 15 and beyond.

  • OWL web client: the shell of the web client (menu, navigation bar, company switcher) is rewritten with Odoo's OWL framework.
  • ES6 JavaScript modules: files carry the @odoo-module header and are imported like native browser modules.
  • Command palette: the Ctrl+K shortcut opens menus, records and actions from any screen.
  • Content editor: an in-house editor replaces the previous one for descriptions, emails and website pages.
  • Two-factor authentication: users are invited to enable it and, if needed, a code sent by email enforces it for everyone.

Odoo 15 end of support: where do things stand today?

What this means depends on your hosting. On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, the platform requires a supported version: an Odoo 15 database has to migrate and the timeline is set by the host. On a dedicated server, the database keeps running normally and you choose the moment.

On a dedicated server, the level of risk is measured by the exposure of the database and the sensitivity of the data: a customer portal open to the internet, an online store or payroll data call for a migration planned in the short term. An internal database behind a VPN leaves more time to prepare the project properly. In every case, we advise planning the migration rather than enduring it.

There is also a wear effect: bank connectors, carriers and third-party modules are no longer published for Odoo 15 and recent regulatory requirements, e-invoicing first, are covered by the supported versions.

Migrating Odoo 15 to Odoo 19 or Odoo 20: the method

1

Database audit

Inventory of installed modules, custom developments, third-party modules and interfaces. The volume of custom code dictates the duration, not the size of the database.

2

Choosing the path

Four jumps separate Odoo 15 from Odoo 19, five from Odoo 20. Depending on the state of the database, we run the successive upgrades or start again from a recent version with data migration.

3

Dry run

Each jump is run on a copy, checked on accounting, stock and open documents, then validated by your key users.

4

Go-live

The switch happens during a quiet period, with teams trained on the target screens. Our full method is described on the Odoo migration page.

Points to watch when migrating from Odoo 15

  • Promotions and gift cards: the coupon, promotion and gift card modules of Odoo 15 are replaced in Odoo 16 by a single loyalty programme. Existing rules are carried over into the new model.
  • Analytic accounting: analytic tags disappear in Odoo 16 in favour of analytic plans. Analysis axes must be redefined before migrating the entries.
  • Subscriptions: in Odoo 16, a subscription becomes a recurring sales order. Running contracts are converted and invoicing habits need a review.
  • Custom developments: native views, fields and methods have changed with every version since 2021. A module written for Odoo 15 is largely rewritten.
  • Website: from Odoo 18 onwards, the /odoo prefix is used by the back office. Public pages under that path must be moved.
  • Arriving in Odoo 20: access rights, document printing and field service need checking, as detailed on the Odoo 20 page.

A project left pending on Odoo 15, partially delivered or dropped by a provider, belongs on the Odoo project rescue page.

Frequently asked questions about Odoo 15

No. Its support ended in October 2024, three years after its release. Only Odoo 20, Odoo 19 and Odoo 18 receive fixes from the publisher today.

Audio and video calls in Discuss, the new content editor, coupons and promotions at the till, gift cards, redesigned inventory adjustments, the EU One Stop Shop for VAT and, on the technical side, the OWL web client with ES6 JavaScript modules.

On Odoo Online and Odoo.sh, the platform requires a supported version: the migration is part of the service and is planned with the host.

On a dedicated server, yes: the database keeps running. The publisher no longer issues security fixes, so the risk depends on the exposure of the database and the sensitivity of the data. We advise planning the migration rather than enduring it.

Four to Odoo 19 (16, 17, 18, 19) and five to Odoo 20. Data is migrated version after version; your users only discover the target version.

For data migration, yes. For a heavily customised database, a fresh start on a recent version with import of historical data can prove safer. We decide after the audit.

No. They are reviewed one by one: ported when they remain useful, replaced when the standard now covers the need. The code we deliver is handed over to you and belongs to you.
