How long does an Odoo project take?
The length of an Odoo project depends less on the software than on your availability. Configuration moves quickly: it is decisions, data and your teams' time that set the schedule.
Depending on scope, the length of an Odoo project runs from 8 weeks for a small first batch to 12 months for a multi-site mid-sized company. This page explains what sets the schedule of an Odoo deployment and how to hold the go-live date.
The short answer
Short answer: from 8 weeks for a small first batch to 12 months for a multi-site mid-sized company. An ERP migration takes 2 to 9 months and a process review 3 to 8 weeks.
Only a very limited scope (standard Odoo, no interfaces, no data migration) goes live in a few weeks. As soon as there is data to migrate or processes to document, the schedule is measured in months.
One of our clients in industrial production, with ten people, migrated its ERP in two months with no interruption to business, using seven modules.
What sets the length of an Odoo project
The scope
The number of applications, companies and currencies to put into service.
The state of your data
A clean export is migrated quickly. Several spreadsheets to reconcile slow things down.
The gap from standard
What can be configured goes fast. What requires development lengthens the schedule.
Your teams' availability
Key users need time to decide, test and sign off.
The number of sites
Each site brings its own habits, stock and training.
Interfaces
Bank, payroll, line-of-business tools or sales platforms require dedicated testing.
The main stages of an Odoo deployment, from scoping to go-live
1
Scoping
We describe the processes, set the scope of the first batch and name the key users.
2
Odoo configuration
We configure Odoo on standard, handle the gaps and prepare the interfaces.
3
Data migration and acceptance
Test import, checks, corrections, sign-off by your teams.
4
Go-live
Training, production cut-over, then support during the first weeks.
What makes a project slip
- key users unavailable when decisions are needed;
- an underestimated data migration;
- decisions that drag on for lack of arbitration;
- a scope that grows with every meeting;
- training that comes too late.
These causes are organisational, not technical. They are detailed in why an ERP project fails.
To neutralise them, our organisation consulting practice offers upstream project scoping: a free on-site situation audit, a process review, project owner assistance and change management support. Discover our organisational consulting.
Splitting the project into waves
Each wave stands on its own and delivers a benefit. If the project stops after the second, that wave has already paid off. It is safer than a big bang and it lets you learn on a limited scope before widening it.
For an order of magnitude by area, see the applications and sectors pages. These durations are guidelines, not promises.
Frequently asked questions about Odoo project duration
Only for a very limited scope, with no data migration or interfaces. As soon as you need to migrate data, train teams and document processes, one month is not realistic.
From 8 weeks for a small first batch to 12 months for a multi-site mid-sized company. For an SME, the schedule depends mostly on data migration and key user availability: a focused first batch goes live within a few months.
From 2 to 9 months depending on data volume, the number of modules and the legacy tool. The fastest migration we have carried out took 2 months. On a database that stayed standard, an upgrade can even take 1 day.
An Odoo deployment starts from another tool or from spreadsheets: scoping, Odoo configuration, data migration, training. An Odoo migration moves an existing database to a more recent version, carrying the custom modules over. Both are planned in waves.
By naming key users who are available, cleaning the data beforehand and limiting the first batch to what brings the most value.
We prepare the migration of balances and open documents, then switch over on a chosen date to limit the impact. Our reference migration was done with no interruption to business.
Yes, our team works throughout France, remotely or on site. On-site presence remains possible on request.
