Comparison · Odoo versus Sage
Odoo or Sage: how to decide
Sage is widespread in SMEs and well known to accounting firms. Odoo goes much further: it links sales, inventory, manufacturing, projects and accounting in a single flow, with unmatched flexibility.
Our job is integrating Odoo: we are therefore a stakeholder. This page also says what Sage does well and when it is enough.
Odoo or Sage: the answer in a few lines
Short answer: if your need is limited to accounting and invoicing, Sage is often enough. As soon as your spreadsheets glue together sales, inventory, manufacturing and accounting, Odoo is the most consistent and scalable choice.
Sage is historically a publisher of accounting and management software, with several ranges depending on company size. Odoo is a modular ERP: all applications share the same database and the same customer, item and supplier records.
The real question is not "which is best": it is what you will need in three years and how many tools you will accept to link by hand until then.
What Sage does well
- Your accounting firm's habits. Many firms already work on Sage.
- Accounting alone. For a business without stock or manufacturing, a tool centred on accounting is easy to pick up.
- A large installed base. Sage skills are easy to find.
Where Odoo goes much further
- One tool from quotation to accounting entry. A confirmed order triggers delivery, invoice and entry, with no bridge to maintain.
- Native inventory, manufacturing, purchase and projects. They share the same data instead of being linked afterwards.
- Unmatched flexibility. Configuration by advanced users, catalogue modules and clean custom development that leaves the core untouched: the tool fits your business instead of imposing its own.
- Freedom of choice. Open code for the Community and Enterprise editions, hosting by the publisher, on Odoo.sh or on your server, and data that stays yours.

A flexibility no other management tool matches
This is where Odoo stands out most. An ERP is only valuable if it fits your organisation: Odoo adapts at several levels, without ever touching the core of the software.
- Configuration: fields, views, stages, rights and automations adjusted without code.
- Modules: a very broad catalogue of applications, including the ANOR shop modules.
- Custom development in Python, clean and maintainable, by extension: see our custom Odoo development.
- Integrations through APIs, to link Odoo to your existing tools.
- Version upgrades prepared, thanks to a core that stays standard.
When to choose Sage or Odoo
Sage can be enough if
- your need is purely accounting and your firm is strongly attached to it;
- you have no real stock or manufacturing and no growth plan.
Switch to Odoo if
- your Excel files glue together sales, inventory and accounting;
- you want to open a site, a company or an online shop without adding a new tool;
- you want a tool that adapts to your business rather than the other way round.
To decide on your figures rather than impressions, ANOR's complimentary situation audit measures your real flows on site and compares them with the cost of a change.
An open, high-performance technical foundation built for AI
Odoo rests on two open, proven building blocks, then adds artificial intelligence to its applications.
PostgreSQL, an open and ultra high-performance database
Odoo relies on PostgreSQL, the reference open database: robust, fast on large volumes and with no licence to pay for the database.
A Python framework, the language of AI
Odoo adaptations are written in Python, the dominant language of artificial intelligence: skills are plentiful and AI plugs in naturally.
Particularly advanced AI in Odoo 20
Odoo 20 embeds AI in its applications: agents, AI-computed fields and connection to external tools through the MCP protocol. The Enterprise edition has more than 50 AI modules.
