Comparison · Odoo versus Business Central
Odoo or Business Central: how to decide
Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft's ERP for SMEs, tied to the Microsoft 365 world. Odoo goes much further: far more native applications in a single database, unmatched flexibility and a more readable cost.
Our job is integrating Odoo: we are therefore a stakeholder. This page also says what Business Central does well and when it is enough.
Odoo or Business Central: the answer in a few lines
Short answer: Business Central appeals to companies deeply rooted in Microsoft. Odoo covers more functions natively, without buying extensions, and adapts to your organisation more freely, with open code in the Community and Enterprise editions.
Business Central is a proprietary ERP, sold with per-user licences and sector extensions offered by third-party publishers. Odoo is a modular ERP whose applications are native and share the same data.
The real question is not "which is best": it is what you will need in three years and how many tools you will accept to link by hand until then.
What Business Central does well
- Integration with Microsoft 365. Outlook, Excel, Teams and Power BI are close.
- The Microsoft brand. Reassuring for some IT departments.
- An extended partner network. Skills available.
Where Odoo goes much further
- A wider native scope. eCommerce, website, projects, HR, manufacturing and marketing are Odoo applications, not third-party extensions to assemble.
- Adaptation outside the Microsoft platform. Odoo evolutions are done in Python, with no lock-in to a single cloud platform.
- Unmatched flexibility. Configuration by advanced users, catalogue modules and clean custom development that leaves the core untouched: the tool fits your business instead of imposing its own.
- Freedom of choice. Open code for the Community and Enterprise editions, hosting by the publisher, on Odoo.sh or on your server, and data that stays yours.

A flexibility no other management tool matches
This is where Odoo stands out most. An ERP is only valuable if it fits your organisation: Odoo adapts at several levels, without ever touching the core of the software.
- Configuration: fields, views, stages, rights and automations adjusted without code.
- Modules: a very broad catalogue of applications, including the ANOR shop modules.
- Custom development in Python, clean and maintainable, by extension: see our custom Odoo development.
- Integrations through APIs, to link Odoo to your existing tools.
- Version upgrades prepared, thanks to a core that stays standard.
When to choose Business Central or Odoo
Business Central can be enough if
- your IT is entirely built on Microsoft and you value that link;
- an existing Microsoft partner already carries your information system.
Switch to Odoo if
- you want a wide native scope without stacking extensions;
- you want to keep the freedom of hosting and code;
- you want to adapt the tool to your business with no platform constraint.
To decide on your figures rather than impressions, ANOR's complimentary situation audit measures your real flows on site and compares them with the cost of a change.
An open, high-performance technical foundation built for AI
Odoo rests on two open, proven building blocks, then adds artificial intelligence to its applications.
PostgreSQL, an open and ultra high-performance database
Odoo relies on PostgreSQL, the reference open database: robust, fast on large volumes and with no licence to pay for the database.
A Python framework, the language of AI
Odoo adaptations are written in Python, the dominant language of artificial intelligence: skills are plentiful and AI plugs in naturally.
Particularly advanced AI in Odoo 20
Odoo 20 embeds AI in its applications: agents, AI-computed fields and connection to external tools through the MCP protocol. The Enterprise edition has more than 50 AI modules.
