Odoo has accounting. Use it

Pennylane, Sage, Cegid Loop, Sellsy: these tools have their uses. Not at your company — not if you are on Odoo.

The myth of the painless connector

The sales pitch is simple: "The accounting export plugs into Odoo easily." In practice, no connector works perfectly. Every update of Odoo — or of the third-party tool — is a risk of breakage. Edge cases never survive an export well: partial credit notes, early-payment discounts, multi-currency, year-end rebates, provisions. And it is you — or your integrator — who fixes it.

Not to mention the subscription, the connector license, and the maintenance hours. What you thought was a simple solution becomes a recurring and unpredictable burden.

⚠️ Audit trail: in the event of a tax audit (DGFiP), you will have to produce a FEC. If your entries come from a third-party tool, the link with the operational documents in Odoo is lost. The audit trail is fragmented — and the consequences can be serious.

Analytics: where the choice does the most damage

This is the point least often explained, and yet the most impactful.

In Odoo, analytic accounting is not a layer added after the fact. It is carried by every business operation, from the start:

Sales order

Breakdown by axis, cost center, job — from confirmation

Timesheet

Actual hourly cost charged to the project or client in real time

Manufacturing order

Materials, machine time, labor — all broken down analytically

Subscription / contract

Recurring revenue assigned to the relevant commercial or product axis

What you get in real time: margin per job, profitability per salesperson, actual cost per site, contribution per sales channel. With no manual processing. No rework.

The third-party tool, for its part, only sees the invoice. Never the order. Never the origin. It receives amounts — not meaning.

Concrete result: your CFO spends hours every month reconstructing an analysis that Odoo would have produced automatically. And the result remains approximate, because the operational granularity is lost at export.

What you can't get back

Those who migrated to Odoo after several years on a third-party tool know it: the analytic history is often unrecoverable. The amounts are there. The structure — axes, cost centers, links with operational documents — is lost. You start from zero, with no reference baseline for comparison.

Cash flow forecasts: flying blind

Odoo's cash management module is fed by confirmed orders, running subscriptions, vendor payment schedules and customer follow-ups. It anticipates. A third-party accounting tool works only on actuals: what has been invoiced, what has been collected. The predictive view disappears completely.

Multi-company: multiplied complexity

If your structure includes several entities, Odoo natively handles intra-group consolidation: automatic inter-company entries, elimination of internal flows, a unified group dashboard. As soon as a third-party tool enters the loop, this consolidation becomes a project in its own right — with manual inter-company eliminations and a risk of error at every close.

2026 electronic invoicing: Odoo is a PDP

Odoo — an officially registered Partner Dematerialization Platform

The electronic invoicing reform is coming into force gradually from 2026. Odoo is registered as a PDP: issuing, receiving and transmission to the PPF are handled natively, without an intermediary.

Adding a third-party tool to this chain creates a point of friction in a flow that must be perfectly traceable from a regulatory standpoint. Every additional intermediary is a compliance risk.

The real cost: what they don't show you

ItemWhat you are shownWhat really happens
Third-party tool subscription€X/monthAnnual repricing + add-on modules
Odoo connector"Included" or one-off feeMaintenance with each Odoo version
Monthly reconciliationNot mentioned1 to 3 days/month depending on complexity
Double trainingNot mentionedTwo tools = two trainings, two sets of documentation
Anomaly handlingNot mentionedDiscrepancies, duplicates, mismatches at every close
Real total cost vs. displayed costOften 3 to 5× the quoted price

The accountant's case

The accountant who imposes their own tool has legitimate reasons: they know its interface, their teams are trained, their processes are well established. This comfort is understandable.

But their comfort must not dictate your IT architecture. They are not the one running your business day to day.

An accountant can perfectly well work directly in Odoo — read access for review, one-click FEC export, a dedicated closing dashboard. Those who have adopted it never go back. If yours flatly refuses, that is a conversation to have.

What you already have in Odoo

  • Complete general accounting — French chart of accounts, FEC, VAT, tax returns
  • Multi-axis analytics — automatic breakdown from the operation, with no rework
  • Cash flow forecasting — fed by operations in real time
  • Bank reconciliation — OFX/CSV import, automatic reconciliation by rules
  • PDP e-invoicing — native 2026 compliance, no intermediary
  • Multi-company consolidation — automated intercompany, group dashboard
  • Reporting and dashboards — from real operational data

Key takeaway: Odoo's strength is not being good accounting software. It is being the only system where operations and finance live together. An order generates a delivery slip, which generates an invoice, which generates an entry — with all its analytic breakdown — with no break, no loss of information, no human interpretation in between.

Pennylane, Sage, Cegid Loop, Sellsy, Fulll, Dext, Indy, Tiime, Axonaut: these tools have their uses for anyone without an ERP. If you are on Odoo, you already have something better. Don't sabotage it by adding a layer that destroys its consistency.
